Modal analysis is an important tool for understanding the vibration characteristics of mechanical structures. It converts the vibration signals of excitation and responses measured on a complex structure that is difficult to perceive, into a set of modal parameters which can be straightforward to foresee. Modal analysis determines all the possible unforced free vibration natural mode shapes and their associated frequencies of the concerned structure without any damping. These data helps later when performing forced vibration.
A modal test consists of an acquisition phase and an analysis phase. The complete process is often referred to as a Modal Analysis or Experimental Modal Analysis.
